October in Central Florida is when it finally turns. The daily storms of summer taper off, the humidity breaks, the mornings turn cool and dry, and the dry season that makes Florida winters worth it is finally here. This is the front edge of the best riding on the calendar, cool clear mornings and long days in the saddle. The deer start moving and the first cold fronts slide through, so ride smart, but October is the month Central Florida riders wait all summer for.
Ride of the Month: The Ocala National Forest Loop
Miles of shaded forest two-lane, spring-fed runs, and the best canopy riding in Central Florida
Head north and west toward the Ocala National Forest, the southernmost forest in the country and a rider's playground of long, shaded two-lanes. Run SR-40 east across the forest and link SR-19 north toward Salt Springs, or drop down to Astor on the St. Johns River. The road runs smooth under a canopy of sand pine and live oak, past the crystal spring runs at Juniper, Alexander, and Salt Springs. In October the heat is finally gone and the forest air turns cool and clean.
Fill up before you head in, services are thin inside the forest, watch the shaded pavement for sand and fallen limbs, and give the deer and the black bear plenty of room, this is real bear country. Stop at a spring to cool off, then loop back through Eustis or Mount Dora with the day still ahead of you.
For real elevation, run the Sugarloaf Mountain and Clermont hills west of the city, the closest climbs to Orlando. Slower pace? Loop the old citrus towns around Mount Dora and Lake County, or run Wekiva and Rock Springs Road under the oak canopy. Chasing the coast? Take the 528 Beachline east to Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast for a straight blast to the ocean. All of it rides better now that the summer heat has finally let go.
Fall Riding Safety: Florida Edition
October flips Central Florida from storm season into dry season, and the change brings its own set of hazards.
- The deer are moving. Florida's rut runs through the fall, and the deer are most active at dawn and dusk on the forest and rural roads around Ocala, Clermont, and the Wekiva country. Scan the shoulders and tree lines, cover your brakes, and never swerve blind across the center line.
- The first fronts bring cool mornings and fog. October cold fronts finally break the heat, but they also leave cool, damp mornings with patchy fog in the low spots and along the river bottoms. Dress in layers, and give the fog and the cold tires long following distance until the sun burns it off.
- The days are getting short. Sunset creeps earlier all month, and the low sun sits right in the eyes of the drivers behind you on the east-west roads. Run your light, wear something bright, and ride like the car back there cannot see you.
- The seasonal traffic is back. Fall brings the return of snowbirds and steady theme-park tourists, many of them unfamiliar with the roads and looking at everything but you. Ride like the rental car beside you cannot see you, because it probably cannot.
Know Your Florida Law
- PIP does not cover you on a bike. Florida is a no-fault state, but PIP does not extend to motorcyclists. There is no personal injury protection on your bike for your own medical bills, so strong health coverage and UM are essential, and the liability claim carries the weight.
- Fault now has a cutoff. Since the 2023 reforms Florida uses modified comparative negligence. Your recovery drops by your share of the blame, and if you are found more than 50 percent at fault, you collect nothing.
- The helmet and the 10,000 dollar rule. Riders 21 and older can ride without a helmet only if they carry at least 10,000 dollars in medical benefits coverage. Under 21 must always wear a DOT helmet, and insurers still use the helmet question against injured riders.
- You have two years, and many drivers carry no injury coverage. Florida cut the deadline to file to two years, and it does not require ordinary drivers to carry bodily-injury liability, so UM/UIM is your real backstop. Do not wait to get advice.
